Hello, my name is

Pranayaa Jeyaraman

I’m a Passionate Student

About me

The way biological research can evolve into lifesaving therapies inspires me, and I aim to pursue a path where my clinical experiences and scientific curiosity work together.

I am Pranayaa Jeyaraman, a student who ties her passion and creativity to everything I pursue. I enjoy connecting my curiosity in the classroom to the lab and stage, developing solutions and spurring action. Through research, patient care, and community service, I aim to grow into a physician-researcher with both strong foundations based on first-hand experience and empathy in and out of the clinical setting.

I also love to explore anything in the arts, from playing the piano to charcoal sketching. My family and I travel sporadically, usually heading anywhere with water and long hikes. I intend to continue this exploration into college and my career.

Research Experience

As a Research Analyst at Children’s National Hospital Foundation in Washington, DC, I studied the global relationship between asthma prevalence and motor vehicle usage. My work involves examining datasets from more than 200 countries to understand how vehicle concentration may influence respiratory health trends. This interdisciplinary project requires strong data analytics, environmental science insight, and epidemiological reasoning—skills I have strengthened through extensive data cleaning, cross-validation of international health statistics, and the development of visual models that highlight key patterns.

I developed CLARITY, a skin-checker AI web application (theclarityai.com) designed to make early skin cancer screening more accessible. Using machine and deep learning trained on the PAD-UFES-20 dataset of 2,298 clinical images, CLARITY distinguishes malignant and benign lesions with exceptional accuracy. Users can upload an image to receive an instant primary diagnosis and the top five closest matches, complete with key clinical details. Validated with an independent ISIC dataset, CLARITY achieved 91% accuracy in its primary prediction and 95% accuracy within its top three. I presented this work at the Johns Hopkins GHLC Conference, where it earned the Student Speaker Series Award.

I researched and authored a book that explores the science of how memory is stored and processed in the brain. It breaks down the complex mechanisms of memory formation, retention, and recall into clear, accessible explanations. The book also provides practical strategies and techniques to enhance memory, offering readers actionable tips they can easily integrate into their daily lives.

I developed a study model combining Artificial Intelligence (AI) with Compressive Sensing (CS) to improve personal healthcare diagnostics. By efficiently compressing biomedical signals like ECG data and analyzing them against millions of stored samples, the system enables rapid detection of potential heart issues. This approach provides physicians with actionable insights faster, reduces analysis time, and supports more effective patient care.

Academic & Pre-Med Enrichment Programs

Columbia University Science Honors Program (SHP)

Selected for Columbia University’s highly competitive in-person Science Honors Program beginning in Fall 2023, completing advanced coursework in biotechnology, biomedical engineering, and human physiology. Through hands-on experiences in oncology research labs, I observed brain tumor models, studied tumor-specific mutations, and explored gene-marking techniques using luminescence to assess treatment outcomes. I also completed Introduction to the Latest Computer Technologies (Fall 2024), gaining practical experience with Python and emerging computing technologies through real-world projects. In Spring 2025, I further expanded my foundation in medicine by studying human physiology, focusing on the major systems of the human body.

RWJ Health BOLD (Bio CONECT Oncology Leadership Development) Program

I was competitively selected for the RWJ Health BOLD (BioCONECT) Oncology Leadership Development Program, a selective initiative designed to prepare students for careers in oncology and biomedical leadership. The program offered in-depth exposure to cancer biology, pathology, and treatment modalities through expert-led sessions and real-world clinical case studies. I worked closely with oncology professionals to analyze current challenges in cancer care and gained firsthand insight into cutting-edge advances in diagnosis and therapy, as well as the diverse clinical and research pathways within oncology.

Rutgers University — Waksman Student Scholar Program (WISE)

Selected as a Waksman Student Scholar, I conducted hands-on research at the Waksman Institute of Microbiology in collaboration with Rutgers University scientists. Through this competitive program, I gained rigorous training in core molecular biology techniques, including DNA extraction, PCR amplification, gel electrophoresis, and bioinformatics-based sequence analysis. I independently conducted experiments focused on duckweed genomics and analyzed DNA sequences to investigate species-level variation. As a capstone outcome of the program, I successfully published four Landoltia punctata DNA samples to a public database, contributing original data to the scientific community and strengthening my foundation in experimental design, data analysis, and collaborative research.

Delaware Valley Mini-Medical School Program

Participated in the Delaware Valley Mini-Medical School, an immersive program that strengthened my understanding of the medical field and reaffirmed my commitment to becoming a physician. Through expert-led sessions and real-world healthcare discussions, I explored key topics including mental health care, community health, and healthcare disparities. Learning from professionals such as John Russum, LCSW, and Catalina Figueroa, CHW, provided insight into patient compliance, self-reflection, and the impact of social determinants like housing and income on health outcomes, particularly in urban communities. The mentorship and guidance from instructors, who shared their personal and professional journeys, helped me develop resilience, communication, teamwork, and empathy—essential qualities for patient-centered care—while further motivating me to pursue medicine with confidence and purpose.
